​Relevant traineeships in our communities

Indigenous staff at Amoonguna and Titjikala have this week begun a traineeship to acquire their Certificate 2 in Rural Operations. Santa Teresa staff are due to commence their traineeships on Tuesday 9 September, and more staff in other MacDonnell Regional Council communities will follow.

MacDonnell Regional Council has successfully partnered with the Centre for Appropriate Technology (CAT) and Australian Apprenticeships NT (AANT) to deliver these locally relevant traineeships to its community staff.

The training partnership directly responds to requests from our Councillors and ¬Local Authorities for training that will allow local people to progress their careers and take on more responsibilities in the workplace and in the development of their communities.

Participants gain relevant skills in areas such as landscaping, fencing, operating and maintaining basic machinery and equipment as well as best practices for local government services such as road maintenance and waste management.

Training and assessment occurs over 12 months in participants’ home communities and through regional workshops in centralised communities in their region. Supervised on-the-job training continues throughout the periods between the formal training blocks.

These practical and relevant skills will also provide participants with qualifications that are recognised Australia wide, and can be built on for their future career paths with Council, across the region or around the country.

The Certificate 2 in Rural Operations was initially developed by MacDonnell Regional Council, Central Desert Regional Council and CAT last year as a formal qualification that is relevant to the real jobs that are required in remote Indigenous communities.
