An EMPLOYABILITY partnership between Wellington Shire Council’s Rural Access Project, Sale and District Specialist School, the National Disability Coordination Officer Program and Darryl Whitaker Television Advertising Video Productions (a subgroup of the Wellington Disability Transition Network), has enabled the development of a film and resources to assist people gain employment.
The school has developed an innovative program, made possible through a grant from the Commonwealth Bank, that focuses on individualised career and employability learning, linking to authentic community based work experience. The program focuses on the eight key employability skills; Communication; Teamwork; Problem solving; Initiative and enterprise; Planning and organising; Self-management; Learning and technology.
The film uses case studies of a number of Sale and District Specialist School current and past students who have taken part in the community based work experience program, highlighting the employability skills they developed during the program and on placement.
Community members are invited to the first public screening of the film being held at The Wedge in Sale on Wednesday 9 August from 1.30pm to 2.30pm.
Wellington Shire Council Acting General Manager Community & Culture Sharon Houlihan said: “The aim of the EMPLOYABILITY partnership and the development of the film and resources is to increase awareness of the contribution young people with disabilities can make to the workforce and their communities.
“The film and resources can be used in schools, employment agencies and with prospective employers, highlighting the skills that young people with disabilities can bring to the workforce. This will increase inclusive employment opportunities and foster community connections in our Shire.”
