Australia’s ‘Most Outstanding Tennis Club’ likely to be demolished

Under the State Government’s North East Link Corridor Option A, Boroondara Tennis Centre - awarded by Tennis Australia as the country’s Most Outstanding Club - would be demolished. 

On Monday 27 November 2017, Tennis Australia recognised Boroondara Tennis Centre, awarding it Most Outstanding Club. While Boroondara Tennis Centre was a clear standout from the 13,500 tennis courts located across Australia, celebrations were dampened by the prospect of the club's demolition to make way for North East Link Corridor A.

City of Boroondara is extremely concerned that the highly regarded community facility is in the path of a mega-freeway.  

On average each year, more than 45,000 people from all ages and abilities access the versatile tennis programs at the tennis centre. Almost nine percent of the Boroondara population plays tennis and the Boroondara Tennis Centre plays a key role in meeting this demand.  

Boroondara Tennis Centre won the award because of its ability to provide a welcoming and accessible venue that provides programs and playing opportunities for the community, including neighbouring schools.  

City of Boroondara will continue to advocate for the community to protect Boroondara’s environment, facilities and local amenity. Owned by the City of Boroondara, the tennis centre is one of Melbourne’s largest public access facilities, with 23 outdoor courts and a range of surfaces, including synthetic grass, clay and hard courts.
