Mayor promotes beach access for everyone, ahead of GC2018

Beach access equipment is now available at 10 locations across the city in time for Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Better access to beaches is part of the City’s commitment to ensuring that everyone can have a beach experience.

Mayor Tom Tate said the City’s Beach Access Program provides residents and visiting para-athletes better access to a number of beaches.

“The community asked for better access to our beaches and we listened,’’ he said.

“With only a few weeks to go until the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, there has never been a more important time to ensure our city is accessible for people of all ages and abilities.

“Through our Accessible and Inclusive City Action Plan we are doing all we can to remove barriers, and create a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone who lives, works and visits the Gold Coast.”

Locations throughout the city include Kurrawa Beach, Nobby Beach, North Burleigh Beach, Palm Beach (Pacific SLSC), Southport Beach, Tallebudgera Beach, Tallebudgera Creek, Burleigh Heads Beach, Southport Broadwater Parklands (Aqua Splash), and City-wide use from Gold Coast Recreation and Sport, Southport.   

Mayor Tate said the City has partnered with Surf Life Saving Clubs and community groups to deliver the program.

“Our relationship with the Surf Life Saving Clubs and community groups is really important as they play a big role in helping us deliver the program,” he said.

“Club volunteers roll out the mats on weekends during patrol season.

“Many families are already benefiting from the equipment that is available for free.”

The City has allocated $341,000 to deliver the program.  

Our City also provides a range of accessible supporting infrastructure such as viewing platforms along the Oceanway, changing places toilets, accessible barbeques and showers.
