Maria Borg, Marley and Mayor Frank CarboneFairfield City Council has committed $28,000 to establishing a new off-leash dog park by July 2018 at Prout Park, Mt Pritchard, bringing the City’s off-leash dog parks to four.
The newest addition will be a fully fenced off-leash area located off Oliphant Street near the current carpark. Fairfield City Mayor Frank Carbone says adding a dog off-leash area is a priority for Council, and gives local residents a dedicated space to exercise their dogs. “Exercise is essential to a dog’s happiness,” said Mayor Carbone. “Off-leash parks allow dogs and their owners to socialise, and allow owners to enjoy the freedom of watching their dogs enjoy doing what they love. “Off-leash parks are especially useful when dog owners live in small units or have backyards that don’t allow dogs to roam free. “The dog parks are also another way Council is encouraging healthy living in our City, helping people to get out and about in a safe environment.” Works on the Mt Pritchard off-leash dog park are due to commence in May, with completion estimated for July. As with all Fairfield City Council off-leash parks, there are rules regarding their use. Dogs have to be under the effective control of a competent person, with no more than four dogs allowed per person. Dogs must be trained to return to the owner when called. Dogs declared menacing, dangerous or a restricted breed are prohibited in off-leash areas. Council’s existing off-leash areas are in Canley Vale, off Railway Parade near Stuart Street, King Park in Wakeley and at Wilson Park in Bonnyrigg Heights.
