Celebrating Our Amazing Volunteers

Published on 22 May 2018

Baw Baw Shire’s team of dedicated volunteers have been celebrated today at the annual National Volunteer Week event held in their honour.

The event, held at the Warragul Cinemas, is one of thousands held across Australia during National Volunteer Week to acknowledge the valuable contributions made by volunteers.

CEO Alison Leighton, Director Corporate and Community Services Mark Dupe and Mayor Cr Joe Gauci were in attendance and thanked the volunteers for their valuable contributions.

The Mayor also spoke of the profound impact of volunteering, especially in regional communities.

“Currently there are 357 amazing volunteers registered with Baw Baw Shire Council that each do great work for our community”, said the Mayor.

“These volunteers provide valuable services such as Meals on Wheels, the community shopping bus, friendly visiting program, community transport and even helping out with the gardening.”

In the past year, Council’s team of registered volunteers have:

Contributed approximately 13,986 hours of time to help the community. Delivered approximately 24,890 Meals on Wheels across the Shire, and Completed 2,311 community transport trips to medical appointments, some as far as Melbourne.

“National Volunteer Week is our opportunity to celebrate these generous, selfless and caring individuals. This years’ theme as announced by Volunteering Australia is “Give a little. Change a lot”. This perfectly describes the impact our many volunteers make, just by giving a little time”, said the Mayor.

“The help volunteers provide, the simple gift of time, kindness and compassion for others, helps transform the lives of our most vulnerable residents. Volunteers are the difference in assisting Baw Baw Shire residents continuing to live independently in their own homes.

“On behalf of the Councillors, the organisation and our wider community, we thank all our volunteers for their service.”

Many volunteers were also presented with certificates of recognition for their long service of 10, 15, 20 and 25 years of service and beyond.
