Unspoken: What Will Become of Me?

Residents are invited to attend an interactive event titled Unspoken: What will become of me? that explores themes of ageing, declining capacity, diminished autonomy and sense of identity gently and with humour.

The event program takes participants through a series of encounters and scenarios, some amusing and others confronting, with the intent to create a safe space to discuss what was previously ‘undiscussable’.

The event also features a performance by physical theatre ensemble ‘Born in a Taxi’, interactive activities and installations, and access to information forums covering topics of advanced care plans and palliative care.

Two sessions have been scheduled for Thursday 17 May at the Warragul Country Club:

Mayor of Baw Baw Shire Councillor Joe Gauci is encouraging the community to attend this insightful and entertaining event that inspires conversations we would often rather avoid.

“It’s natural to find end-of-life conversations difficult and personal. However, having the tools to approach these conversations can be empowering and provide peace of mind that personal preferences and values will be respected at a time when you may not be able to express your thoughts and feelings”, said the Mayor.

“We’re so pleased to welcome this unique event opportunity to Baw Baw Shire to help support our residents in all stages of life.”

Councillors Jessica O’Donnell and Tricia Jones, both members of Council’s Positive Ageing Advisory Committee, are strong supporters of this event and its objective to break down stigma associated with end-of-life conversations.

Cr O’Donnell said the event provides a great opportunity for people to gather their thoughts and information from peer-educators, and perhaps even be inspired to take action.

“It’s all about creating a safe, comfortable environment where people are encouraged to open up, articulate and take steps towards documenting their wishes.”, said Cr O’Donnell.

Cr Jones said, “While the event is primarily for those 50 years of age and over - carers, family members and people of all ages are highly encouraged to attend so they can also receive valuable information and be a part of the conversation with their loved ones.”
