Learn how to avoid becoming a victim of online scammers

Published on 11 May 2018

If you’re an older adult or retiree and want to avoid becoming a victim of online scammers, a series of information sessions will be held next week to provide the latest tips on how to protect yourself.

A joint initiative between Mildura Rural City Council Library Service and Consumer Affairs Victoria (CAV), the information sessions will be presented by CAV staff at Merbein, Red Cliffs and Mildura Libraries, as well as the Ouyen Service Centre.

Councillor for Arts and Culture Jason Modica encouraged Sunraysia residents to take advantage of the information sessions, particularly given the recent scammer activity in the region.

“It’s great to see our older residents increasingly embracing the online world, in fact, they’re now the fastest growing online user group in the country,” Cr Modica said.

“This is fantastic, as it allows residents to keep in touch with children, family and friends, conduct research, book travel or simply take in a YouTube video.

"However the combination of this increased take up and the healthy financial position of many of our older residents unfortunately makes them a target for online scammers.

“Many older residents often own substantial assets and have access to their life savings and superannuation, making them attractive targets.”

CAV, the state’s fair trading regulator, will present one-hour sessions at the following locations and times:

Merbein Library

10am. Wednesday 16 May

Red Cliffs Library

2pm. Wednesday 16 May

Mildura Library

10am. Thursday 17 May

Ouyen Service Centre

2pm. Thursday 17 May

Next week’s sessions are part of a statewide push by CAV, which is working with the Public Libraries Victoria Network to increase awareness and reduce incidents of residents falling victim to online scammers.

“This is a great opportunity to learn more about the common types of scams and how to avoid them, which is invaluable information,” Cr Modica said.

Booking for next week’s sessions are essential and can be made at any of the four venues, or by calling the Mildura Rural City Council Library Service on (03) 5018 8350.
