Melbourne's new Lord Mayor - the first woman directly-elected to the role - said she felt privileged by the support she had received throughout her election campaign and was eager to get to work.

"It's a great honour to be elected Lord Mayor of Melbourne. I am looking forward to working with Deputy Lord Mayor Arron Wood, my fellow councillors and the City of Melbourne executive for the benefit of everyone who lives, works in and visits our wonderful city," the Lord Mayor said.

"Melbourne is one of the world's great cities and is enjoying unprecedented growth and expansion. That presents some challenges as well as some great opportunities.

"I'm looking forward to working with Council to tackle key issues like proactively planning for Melbourne's population growth, major infrastructure projects and our response to homelessness. We are focused on delivering outcomes for Melburnians.

"Leading a constructive and positive Council that works together for all Melburnians is my number one priority," the Lord Mayor said.

City of Melbourne Chief Executive Ben Rimmer said he joined City of Melbourne staff in welcoming the new Lord Mayor.

"I speak for the entire City of Melbourne team when I say I'm looking forward to working with the new Lord Mayor and Council to continue to support an ambitious Council vision of Melbourne as a bold, inspirational and sustainable city.

"On behalf of administration of the City of Melbourne, I would like to congratulate Lord Mayor Sally Capp and wish her, the Deputy Lord Mayor and Council an enormously successful term moving forward," Mr Rimmer said.

Immediately following this morning's swearing-in ceremony, the Lord Mayor, Deputy Lord Mayor and Councillors each signed Council's recently endorsed Councillor Code of Conduct.
