Environmental Burn at Brooke Moore Reserve
Bathurst 28 May 2018

MEDIA RELEASE 23 May 2018

Bathurst Regional Council in conjunction with the Rural Fire Services is proposing to conduct an environmental burn at Brooke Moore Reserve, West Bathurst.

The burn is scheduled for Saturday 26 May 2018, subject to weather conditions. The burn will be approximately 0.8ha in size and is located along the Alexander Street side of the reserve.

A low intensity, cool burn is proposed that aims to improve the diversity of flora in the reserve. The burn will also reduce the fuel build up at the reserve and reduce the risk of an uncontrolled bushfire from occurring during the hotter months.

Mayor Graeme Hanger OAM said the proposed burn aims to encourage regrowth of a diverse range of native grasses, herbs and wildflowers from the endangered Box Gum Grassy Woodland.

“Many species rely on fire to germinate or set seed, and may disappear if the frequency is too low or high. Brooke Moore Reserve hasn’t had a burn a many years,” he said.

There is potential for smoke to impact surrounding residents and roads. An electronic message sign will be placed along Suttor and Alexander Streets, and a letterbox drop has been conducted to notify surrounding residents of the proposed burn date and measures to prepare their properties.
