The Girrawheen-Koondoola Senior Citizens Centre will temporarily close in June to allow the City of Wanneroo to carry out upgrades and refurbishments.

During the closure from Monday 4 to Sunday 10 June, the City will install a new public announcement system, a projector and screen in the main hall, a divider wall between the meeting and dining rooms, and lockable storage cages in the courtyard. Fresh new carpets will also be laid throughout the Centre.

Other improvements include new tables and chairs and painted external walls.

Visitors to the Centre will also be able to unleash their inner child, thanks to new giant indoor games and an exergaming (Wii) system, while new yoga mats will encourage health, fitness and mindfulness.

The upgrades are being carried out as part of the City of Wanneroo’s 2017/18 Capital Works Program and have been made possible because of a $290,000 funding grant through the State Government’s Local Projects Local Jobs (LPLJ) Initiative.

Mayor Tracey Roberts said the improvements had been chosen in consultation with centre users and Local Member for Girrawheen, Ms Margaret Quirk MLA.

“The Girrawheen-Koondoola Senior Citizens Centre is a very popular community hub for our City’s older residents,” Mayor Roberts said.

“These refurbishments will improve the Centre for all users, and I would like to extend my thanks to Ms Margaret Quirk for securing the funding for this project.”

During the closure period, the City will provide assistance to those groups wishing to temporarily relocate to alternative facilities so they can continue running their programs.

Separately to this, an unused podiatry room is being converted into a fully compliant Universal Access Toilet (UAT) and storage facility from 21 May.

These particular works will have a minimal impact on the Centre’s operations and regular user groups.
