New car park provides safer access

Residents are now enjoying easier and safer access to East Hills Park, following the completion of the first stage of construction on a new car park.

Mayor Khal Asfour inspected the new facility today, accompanied by Councillors Linda Downey and Steve Tuntevski who helped drive the project.

“The most important factor about this project is that visitors no longer need to park on the shoulder of Henry Lawson Drive,” Mayor Asfour said.

“There are now 26 spaces in a dedicated car park, with a further 44 to be added in stage two next year.

“East Hills Park is one of our most popular recreation areas, so it is important we accommodate the growing need for safer parking.

“I’ve noticed park visitors are already using the new car park which is fantastic.”

Mayor Asfour said Council was required to consider a number of options before work started.

“Different designs needed to be considered after environmental studies found a number of trees in the area should be protected,” Mayor Asfour said.

“The preferred design is the best possible outcome and also ticks the box for safety and accessibility.”

The second stage of construction is detailed in Council’s 2018-19 Operational Plan, which is currently on public exhibition until Thursday 31 May.
