Bland Shire Council will be conducting a free information session on how to stay safe on the road as an older driver, pedestrian, and mobility scooter user.
The session will be held at the West Wyalong Services & Citizens Club on Wednesday 23 May at 10.30am.
Council’s Road Safety Officer said, “It is important for senior members of our community to be aware of the changes to road rules and how to stay safe on our roads as both an older driver and a pedestrian.
Seniors are also choosing to use mobility scooters to maintain their independence and stay connected as they give the operator freedom and independence they would not normally have.”
With an increasing number of residents using this mode of transport, the information provided will be designed to assist operators to use the road and footpaths safely.
By attending the information session, participants can learn about introducing small changes that will make them safer – including planning safe routes, understanding how to use footpaths, and safety around driveways.
“A motorised wheelchair/scooter user is considered to be a pedestrian, and must comply with the NSW Road Rules that apply to pedestrians. To ensure motorised wheelchairs can mix safely with other pedestrians, they must meet the requirements of NSW Road Rules 2014.”
“It is also important for older drivers and mobility scooter users to have been checked by a health professional and receive advice on how to stay safe, particularly with different kinds of medications. The information session will provide an opportunity for operators to access advice from experts such as the local Police, Allied Health and others”, she said.
In addition, Riverina Scooters will also have an extensive range of motorised mobility scooters on display and will be happy to talk to you about your needs.
