Chiton - Suburb name change

Chiton - Suburb name change

The South Coast's new suburb

Alexandrina’s portion of Hayborough will be officially named Chiton after the Office of the Surveyor General and the Minister endorsed Council’s name change proposal. The change will officially take effect on 7 June 2018.

The Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure have provided a fact sheet of information for residents of Chiton to advise required action for the suburb name change. View fact sheet here

Hayborough is the only suburb in South Australia that straddles two council districts – Alexandrina and Victor Harbor. The change will see the suburb of Hayborough split by the existing Council boundaries, with the Alexandrina side becoming the new suburb of Chiton, and the Victor Harbor side retaining the name Hayborough.

"This is a fantastic outcome for the Alexandrina residents of Hayborough. This is a process that has been driven by our community, which will define our residents as part of the Alexandrina Council region,"said Mayor Keith Parkes.

The name Chiton is synonymous with the area, with the Chiton Rocks Surf Lifesaving Club formed in 1957, and popular surf beach drawing tourists and locals alike to the area.
