On Tuesday 17 September, Eurobodalla Shire Council will be consulting with the community about a request to remove a Norfolk Pine tree that sits next to the war memorial on Plantation Point at Tuross Head.

The request to remove the tree has come from a group of local volunteers who look after the Tuross Memorial Gardens and follows the group's concern that the roots are damaging the brick monument to returned servicemen and women.

The tree is one of a stand of more than 97 Norfolk pines and the proposal to remove it is being supported by the Tuross Head Progress Association and the Tuross Head Lakes Preservation Group.

Eurobodalla Shire Council Mayor, Lindsay Brown, says the Tuross community groups have proposed that the single tree be removed and that council puts plans in place to ensure the protection of the remainder of the plantation.

"Decisions to remove old trees such as this one are not taken lightly by council. I encourage others to let us know what they think about the proposal," said Cr Brown.

The Mayor will be at the meeting with other Eurobodalla Shire councillors, council staff and representatives of the community groups.

Once council has heard from the broader community, Cr Brown says a report will be finalised for a council meeting during which councillors will be asked to make a decision about the future of the Norfolk Pine tree.
