Pool owners in the Eurobodalla are obliged to register their backyard swimming pools online by 29 October 2013 as part of a NSW Government and Royal Life Saving initiative designed to reduce the number of child deaths by drowning.
Registering your pool online is free but for those people unable to do this, Eurobodalla Shire Council can help you, says Mayor Lindsay Brown.
He says the register is the focus of the NSW Government's Be Pool Safe campaign which aims to improve the safety of children under the age of five years and reduce the number of pool-related injuries and deaths by highlighting a range of water safety strategies specific to the backyard swimming pool.
"When you register, you will be asked to check and then report to the best of your knowledge that your pool complies with the necessary Australian Standard," said Cr Brown. "You will receive safety checklists that will help you conduct an assessment about the safety of your pool."
Cr Brown says the Be Pool Safe campaign also comes with a number of helpful fact sheets about the NSW Swimming Pool Register, supervision, how to restrict access to backyard pools, water awareness and resuscitation.
The NSW Swimming Pool register and fact sheets can be found at www.swimmingpoolregister.nsw.gov.au. If you are not able to register your pool online, you can register it through council.
