This week, council will begin the next round of major road works on the Narooma flat. These works will be completed in time for Christmas and will wrap up phase one of the streetscaping project.
The works along the Princes Highway, between McMillian Road and Wharf Streets, will create a new intersection that will provide access to Club Narooma and lay the first road pavement for the roundabout.
Conduits for underground power and other underground facilities that will service the visitors' centre and Wharf Street will also be laid during the works. Pathways and green areas off the road are also to be established, transforming the area.
Chair of the Narooma Streetscape Sunset Advisory Committee, Eurobodalla Shire Council Mayor, Lindsay Brown, says the works to date have involved overcoming a number of challenges including high water tables, a complex network of underground services with optic fibre lines, sewer, stormwater and major trunk and water main services.
"The onsite crews have done a great job dealing with the myriad of underground services. We can now see the road works on Bluewater Drive and the roundabout starting to take shape," said Cr Brown. "It's exciting to get a first glimpse of what the work will look like when it's completed."
Council has been working with the owners of the old Caltex service station, the Environmental Protection Agency and WorkCover to make sure the environment is protected during the construction work.
"We will continue to work with Caltex throughout the Narooma Streetscaping Project until the work nearby has been completed and the owners have remediated the site," said Cr Brown.
The Mayor says two proposals for new pedestrian refuges along the Princes Highway are currently being exhibited by council and there are plans to also exhibit the draft concepts for the second landscaping phase while the road construction work is underway.
"The Narooma Streetscape Sunset Advisory Committee will be asking businesses and residents for feedback on the landscape concept plans from 24 August," said Cr Brown.
