Due to the global recycling crisis, local councils across Australia are facing increased costs to process recyclables from residential households.
Bayside previously budgeted for an income of $500,000 in 2017/18 from the sale of recyclables but now faces a cost of $1.7 million for the 2018/19 financial year due to falling demand for these materials.
This is a big shift in pricing and one that all councils are having to deal with going forward.
In Bayside, these increased costs mean our rate payers will see a $92.75 increase in the waste charge on their upcoming rates bill.
Council is offering a reduced financial impact of waste charges on residents by encouraging residents to ‘shrink their bins’ and move to a smaller 80 litre waste bin.*
By moving to a smaller waste bin, you can reduce your waste charge by $78.
We have had a fantastic response from residents, with thousands opting to ‘shrink their bins’.
If you are interested in selecting the smaller bin option and saving $78 on your 2018/19 Rate Notice, sign up for a smaller bin at shrinkmybin before Friday 22 June 2018.
Although residents will benefit immediately from the savings, it may take 4 – 6 weeks before the bin changeover occurs due to high demand for the smaller bins. Please leave your bins out for an additional 24 hours following the normal collection day to allow for changeover during this 4-6 week period.
*Standard bin size is 140 litre
