Parktone Primary School student Alice Roberts has been elected as Kingston’s new Junior Mayor and nine impressive young people elected as a new Junior Council.
Mayor Steve Staikos said the Junior Mayor program has been running for over 50 years and is sponsored by the Chelsea Rotary Club.
“Council is very proud to continue its long and unique tradition of electing a Junior Mayor and the introduction of the Junior Council. The program aims to educate and engage young people about how local government works and how they can get involved and make a difference in our community. It also provides support and experience to our next generation of leaders.”
Each year a grade six student is elected Junior Mayor of the City of Kingston. The election process involves local primary schools each nominating one pupil who makes a two minute speech in front of an audience of around 300 people. Each of the nominated students then votes for their favourite presentation. This year Council also introduced a Junior Council, to allow more young people to take part.
Parktone student Alice Roberts won over the crowd with her speech which addressed this year’s topic: What does hope mean for our community?
