Tackling climate change and rising energy costs with positive action

Kingston Council is calling for community input on ways that Council and the community can take positive action to address climate change.

Mayor Steve Staikos said Council had adopted a plan that will reduce Council’s greenhouse emissions while also significantly cutting energy costs.

“Climate change poses one of the biggest threats to our future. How we respond will determine the future

wellbeing and prosperity of our organisation and the community,” Cr Staikos said.

The proposed Climate Change Strategy sets out an action plan to reduce Council emissions by 30% by 2020 and also encourages the broader community to take positive action.

“We cannot wait for others to take action on climate change; the science is very clear that we must start to reduce our emissions and prepare for the future now,” Cr Staikos said.

The 30% Council reduction will be achieved by:

Upgrading 7000 public street lights (now underway) and 1000 decorative lights with energy efficient LED globes Upgrading lighting in the vast majority of Council buildings Installing solar panels on key Council buildings. Solar panels have already been installed at the Parkdale Family and Children’s Centre with plans to install at both Edithvale and Carrum Family and Children’s Centres.
