Nominations are open for the Victorian School Crossing Supervisor of the Year Award and we want you to acknowledge stand-out crossing supervisors in Maroondah.

The biannual award was established in 2010 to recognise and celebrate the contribution and spirit of work undertaken by school crossing supervisors throughout Victoria.

Deputy Mayor Councillor Mike Symon said the award, given out by School Crossings Victoria, is a chance to publicly acknowledge the valuable work supervisors do for the children and families of Maroondah.

“The Maroondah community is fortunate to have a group of caring and professional school crossing supervisors who perform a vital role in keeping our children and road users safe, so this is a great chance to say thank you,” Cr Symon said.

To be eligible, nominees must be employed as school crossing supervisors through a Victorian Council and should demonstrate the following:

professional demeanour and presentation (uniform and equipment) working knowledge of road rules relating to school crossings welcoming, caring, supportive and encouraging to all users of the crossing helpful, informative, and clear on correct use of the crossing involvement in the school community good attendance and punctuality.

The City of Maroondah has 91 dedicated school crossing supervisors who look after 74 primary and secondary school crossings, braving all sorts of weather to help pedestrians of all ages safely cross the road.

Supervised school crossings were introduced in the 1970s to protect children from risk by way of providing road safety support for students walking or riding to school, helping with traffic congestion issues around school gates.

“School zones are often chaotic during the morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up times, making children more vulnerable and at risk of danger,” Cr Symon said.

“Children cannot reliably judge the speed of vehicles, do not have a well-developed sense of danger and do not understand traffic laws, which is why it’s important we acknowledge the valuable work of our school crossing supervisors.

“It is wonderful that there is an award to acknowledge their efforts and I urge any residents who know of a stand-out supervisor who meets the judging criteria to nominate them. It would be great to see one of our own honoured with this award,” Symon said.

If you know of someone who deserves this award, nominate them before applications close on 25 May. Application forms can be found on the School Crossings Victoria website.
