Retirees, students, professionals, mums and dads – Maroondah volunteers come from all walks of life, yet they share a common goal: to make a difference to the lives of others.
Whether it’s delivering a meal through Meals on Wheels, getting people out and about who might otherwise be feeling isolated, or helping maintain and care for the city’s bushland reserves, Maroondah volunteers are many and varied.
Almost 400 volunteers make an enormous contribution across the Maroondah community.
To show its appreciation, Council will host its annual Community Volunteer Luncheon on Thursday at Karralyka as part of National Volunteer Week (21-27 May).
Maroondah Mayor Cr Nora Lamont said the annual Community Volunteer Luncheon was an opportunity to acknowledge the city’s wonderful volunteers who assist Council with delivering important services and activities for the community.
“Many of Council’s services would not be possible without the generosity of our volunteers. They play an important role in keeping communities healthy, and symbolise what it means to be part of a caring community,” Cr Lamont said.
“Here in Maroondah, we rely on almost 400 generous and hard-working volunteers to keep some of our essential community services and programs running.
“It’s thanks to volunteers that 34 individual Council-run services and projects are offered to our community, including Meals on Wheels, bushland renewal projects, social support, and youth programs such as the L2P driver mentoring program,” she said.
‘Give a little. Change a lot’ is the theme of this year’s National Volunteer Week, and represents the six million Australians who make a profound impact in their communities and on society, through giving a little of their time.
“Time is a valuable commodity in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. But time is something Maroondah volunteers are willing to offer every day to improve the lives of others and their community,” Cr Lamont said.
“Volunteering is such rewarding work. It doesn’t matter if you can spare only a few hours a month, or if you are able to volunteer each week, all offers of assistance are welcome and I encourage interested members of the community to contact Council for more information.”
To find out how you can make a rewarding contribution to the community by becoming a volunteer, call Council on 1300 88 22 33 or apply to be a volunteer.
