Armidale Regional Council in partnership with Create NSW is celebrating World Music Day on Thursday 21 June 2018 with a youthful line-up of local performers at four live and free venues across the Armidale CBD.
Last year over 800 cities across the globe held music celebrations in support of local, live and free music. It all began in France with the event called Fête De La Musique (In French, the name means both “festival of music” and “make music”.) held on the Summer Solstice. They imagined a day where FREE music would be everywhere, all around the city: street corners, parks, rooftops, gardens, and store fronts. Amazingly enough, this dream has come true. The Fête has turned into a true national holiday: Paris shuts down on the summer solstice and musicians take over.
Three decades later, the love of music has spread throughout the world and is now celebrated in more than 800 cities in 120 different countries and now Armidale is joining the global music party!
Chair of the Arts, Cultural and Heritage Advisory Committee Councillor Margaret O’Connor said celebrating World Music Day was a fitting next step in Council’s promotion of live local music after the hugely successful Live and Local music event held in the Armidale CBD earlier in the year.
“The Live and Local event was so popular we wanted to keep the momentum going,” said Cr O’Connor.
“We had some funding leftover thanks to Create NSW and again wanted to promote local musical talent in our region, this time focusing on our younger performers. Celebrating World Music Day and the Winter Solstice makes for a great night out.”
Popular live music venues will be included and for the first time Council will be opening up the Armidale Folk Museum as a venue. The Museum building (formerly the Armidale Literary Institute Building) has a great music legacy with Peter Allen learning to dance there.
The line up and venues include:
Charlie’s Last Stand: Evan & Rhodes 6pm to 8pm/Ash Hall Trio 8.30pm to 10.30pm
New England Hotel: Red Grenadier 6pm to 7.30pm/jAm 8:30-10pm after trivia.
Armidale Folk Museum: Lily Rose 5.30 to 6pm/Cilantro 6pm to 6.30pm/The Graceless 6.30pm to 7.30pm
Wicklow Hotel: Hattie Oates 6pm to 7.30pm/Matty Moo 7.30pm to 9pm
So save the date on Thursday 21 June and be a part of the global music love in known as World Music Day on the Winter Solstice!
