New look and function for street signs

The City of Canterbury Bankstown has welcomed a fresh new look this month, with more than 30 new street signs installed, and more to come.

Mayor, Khal Asfour, said the new street signs will continue to be rolled out across the City, to replace damaged or missing signs.

"They’re more than good-looking – they will improve the way our residents and visitors navigate through Canterbury-Bankstown," Mayor Asfour said.

"On any given day, we have hundreds of thousands of people passing through our City.

"There are more than 65,000 residents aged between five and 18 years, who need to make their way to school, more than 138,000 residents who travel around, and out of, the City for work and more than 94,000 people, who travel from other areas into Canterbury-Bankstown for work.

"Not to mention the people who visit our City for our leisure and recreation purposes. Just last month we had more than 10,000 people visit our Lakemba night markets for Ramadan each weeknight, and more than 15,000 every night on the weekend.

"It’s important we do everything we can to make sure people feel confident getting around."

Councillor, Steve Tuntevski, chairs the Universal Access Committee, which approved the new design, and said the new street signs were a big improvement.

"The committee reviewed two signage options – one with blue writing on a white background, which the former Canterbury and Bankstown Councils traditionally used, and the second with black writing on a white background," the Revesby Ward councillor said.

"We found the second option, paired with capital letters for the street names and our Council brand, had optimum accessibility and aligned closely to Australian Standards.

"Our new signs now provide greater contrast and visibility, further assisting people living with vision impairment to go about their daily lives."
