Kerbside waste collection to continue as normal

Major Australian recycling company, Visy, has announced that they will no longer accept any recyclable material from Council’s current waste contractors, owing to a downturn in the Chinese recyclables market.

Ararat Rural City Council Deputy Mayor, Cr Gwenda Allgood has reassured local residents that kerbside waste and recycling collection will continue as per normal.

“Ratepayers will not see any disruptions to their services or any increase in costs in the short-term,” Cr Allgood said.

“This issue is a contractual matter, however, we would support the Grampians Central West Waste and Resource Recovery Group or the state government taking a lead on the broader issue of recycling.

“Council is already working proactively to develop a solution to the issue, and we are being guided by a number of external stakeholders on this issue, including the Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change.

“This is not an issue localised solely within the Ararat Rural City Council - this is an issue affecting a number of councils right across Victoria, and we have commenced discussions with similarly-affected municipalities as we seek the best outcome for our community.”
