Ararat’s Australia Day Ambassador announced

Dr King will be the keynote speaker Ararat’s Australia Day celebrations on Thursday, January 26 at the Alexandra Oval Community Centre beginning at 12pm.

Ararat Rural City Council Mayor, Cr Paul Hooper said the 2017 official formalities would be slightly different to previous years.

“We have moved our Australia Day Ceremony from the Alexandra Gardens across to the Community Centre this year with a later start and that allows for further celebrations to take place in the Gardens and Outdoor Pool later in the day,” he said.

“The formal ceremony will include presentation to all our Australia Day award recipients, Citizenship ceremony, the Ararat Rural City Band will perform and of course an address from Dr Bronwyn King, which I am particularly looking forward to.”

Since 2009 Dr King has held a specialist appointment role at The Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and also works at the Epworth Hospital where she has a special interest in treating women’s cancers with state of the art equipment and technology.

She is a Radiation Oncologist, CEO of Tobacco Free Portfolios, an honorary Tobacco Control Ambassador for Cancer Council Australia, and an Ambassador for Big Brothers Big Sisters Australia. Dr King has also represented Australia in swimming and served as Team Doctor for the Australian Swimming Team for 10 years.

In 2014, she was named one of the AFR/Westpac 100 Women of Influence.

“Dr King is a truly inspiring woman and will perfectly capture what Australia Day is all about,” Cr Hooper said.

After official proceedings are complete, the celebrations party will move back across to the Alexandra Gardens and Ararat Olympic Outdoor Pool where a number of children’s activities will take place followed by an outdoor cinema.
