Adding colour, fun, shade & native bush tucker @ Dapto Square

Dapto Square will feature more colour, shade and a play space in the next month with a joint partnership breathing new life into the ageing Square.

Wollongong City Council last year asked community members what they would like to see in the Square. Overwhelmingly the residents asked for seating, shade, colour, flowers and a place to meet.

Council has joined with Dapto Leagues Club, Dapto Mall management, Dapto Rotary, and Dapto Chamber of Commerce to bring their ideas to life. The project will introduce temporary structures including a new play space for children, tables and chairs underneath shady umbrellas, garden squares featuring Australian natives bush tucker and bush medicine plants and art works by local young people.

Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said Dapto Square was showing its age and this initiative will revitalise this space. “This is a great project. We’ve been able to introduce fun and colour with a play space, sandstone blocks for seating and new garden beds,” Cr Bradbery said. “This will allow people to visit, meet their friends and children to play. You can even check out the Australian bush tucker in the planter boxes.

“It’s a joyful and fun way to introduce some colour into the town centre. When we activate a small area it also introduces places for people to sit and talk and for children to play. These elements also make for a safer place in the town centre.”

The plan will include murals from Dapto young people featuring the “I Love Dapto Because …” theme. The panels will be attached to the wall of the local ANZ bank. The bush tucker garden is a joint initiative with Endeavour Energy and Greening Australia.

Council will soon be asking community members for feedback on how they like the new town centre project.
