Lifeguards Tim and Mark on patrol at North Beach.
Are you interested in working on one of Wollongong’s world-renowned beaches over the 2018/19 season?
Wollongong City Council will begin recruitment for lifeguards for the 2018/2019 swim season on Tuesday 19 June, when we will hold two information sessions to advise prospective candidates on the requirements.
Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said the lifeguard’s role is essential in our city. “Our beaches are a fabulous attraction for our city. Each year we have thousands of people visit our city to enjoy the beaches and our lifeguards play a vital part in keeping all beachgoers safe.”
As part of their role, Lifeguards make sure people are doing the right thing on our beaches such as swimming between the flags and provide first aid. In addition they are responsible for educating the public on beach safety and help keep our beaches clean.
If you or a family member is interesting in this essential role, Council will hold an information session where you will have the opportunity to talk to staff about what it’s like to be a lifeguard, and find out information on the application process.
There’ll also be an opportunity to talk with a range of providers who can help you with the qualifications necessary for becoming a lifeguard. These qualifications include a Certificate III in Public Safety (Aquatic Search and Rescue), a current First Aid Statement of Attainment and a current Advanced Resuscitation Statement of Attainment. We’re also offering a number of entry level opportunities for rookies who hold a Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue).
Council looks after 17 patrolled beaches between Stanwell Park and Windang. Council lifeguards patrol six days a week, and on Sundays there are volunteer lifesavers from Surf Lifesaving Australia. All of our beaches are patrolled from the start of the September school holidays until the end of the April school holidays.
The lifeguard recruitment information sessions will be held on Tuesday 19 June, 11am – 2pm, and between 3.30pm to 5pm. They will be held in the Whale Room at the Continental Pool, North Wollongong. Applications are expected to open in early July.
