Lower Crown Street Mall will bounce to a different beat on 21-23 June when several larger than life rabbits hop into the Mall.

The large rabbits – an installation artwork, Intrude, from international artist Amanda Parer – will be part of the Nights on Crown winter festivities, which will also feature live music, good food opportunities, dancers, live performances, and interactive activities over the three nights.

“We know the temperature is dropping so we’ve given you a great fun reason to don that jacket and hop into the City Centre. We’ve installed the illuminated rabbits – some are up to seven metres long – to help entice people to visit the city centre,” said Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM.  “The installation will be a perfect place to get that Instagram mid-winter shot.

“Local cafes, bars and food outlets will be staying open for great dining options.  We will also have live music, performances and DJs throughout the eastern end of the Mall. The best time to visit the City is just after sunset to see the giant bunnies and then you can listen to fantastic music and also enjoy the dining options available.”

Live Music A changing line-up of live music will be curated by Wollongong’s Spunk Records and Music Farmers will spice up the sounds of our City this winter. Two Mall shopfronts will host the best new music on offer with short, sharp band sets. The Mall main stage will feature an eclectic mix of sounds, from blues to beatbox and alternate to Afro beat.

Aaron Curnow from Spunk Records said: “At Nights on Crown we’ll have a variety of music styles. The eastern end of the Mall will feature jazz and electronica music on Thursday, Americana and DIY on Friday and indie and dream wave on the Saturday Night.

“With three quarters of the talent for Nights on Crown living in the Wollongong area, it’s also showcasing the incredible local talent.

“Austinmer band Shining Bird will play a rare headline show on the Saturday night, their first in more than a year. The band will feature their classics plus a few new ones thrown in.”

The three nights of music kicks off on Thursday at 6pm in the lower Mall and on the main stage from Friday at 6pm.

Pop Up Performance Keep your eyes open for some exciting pop-up performances in shopfront windows and out on the Mall, all while you’re snapping a selfie with the gigantic rabbits #nightsoncrown

Emma Saunders, Austinmer-based choreographer, said: “I want us to see the Mall differently, as a creative space, a theatre, a dance floor. Where Elvis Presley meets John Travolta meets Pina Bausch meets The Final Countdown. It can also be an imaginative space. I want to break down who dances where and why and celebrate the spaces in between us, and swallow the space whole with our humanity.”

Food Munch your way through tapas, burgers, smoky BBQ, sushi, desserts, there is something to tempt all tastebuds. There are plenty of options to satisfy your hunger as you wander along the rabbit trail.

Dine out during Nights on Crown as many City Centre restaurants and cafes will serve delicious meals to keep you warm this winter.
