Blue Mile Tramway link improves access

The opening of the Blue Mile Tramway Link in the next few weeks will improve accessibility to the Belmore Basin area and to the Continental Pool.

Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said the widening of the Tramway was just part of improving access along the foreshore.

“We’ve widened the shared pathway, added seating and viewing points as well as improving the ramps to the Continental and Gentlemen’s Pools.  We’re also putting two additional accessible parking places on Cliff Road, near the Tramway entry.  This increases the total number of accessible parking places in the precinct from two to five.”

While the new accessible parking places on Cliff Road are only temporary, work is progressing to implement permanent places in this location by summer 2018 / 2019.

As part of the works, Council conducted a safety review and found that private vehicle access on the shared pathway created significant safety issues. Previously some drivers have used the shared pathway to access the Continental Pool, which posed a significant risk for cyclists and pedestrians on the shared pathway.  To ensure the safety of all people in this area private vehicle access will no longer be allowed on the shared pathway.

“With the expected increase in people using this new pathway, we can’t have kids on bikes and families with prams mixing with private vehicles,” said Cr Bradbery. “We want to make sure this great location is safe and accessible for all people.”

Emergency and service vehicles will still be able to access the shared way to empty bins and carry out maintenance.  These vehicles operate under strict safety requirements.

“I’d like to thank everyone for their patience. I’m sure the community will be happy with the transformation of this well-loved precinct,” said Cr Bradbery.
