Speaker series

Designing community: Small public buildings in the inner west Architecture on Show Public amenities are critical pieces of local community infrastructure. They support cyclists, picnickers, tennis players and barbecue enthusiasts. However, these essential buildings are often treated as ugly buildings to be hidden away and avoided. A new collection of small public buildings springing up in the inner west is proving that good design can change this perception, transforming the ubiquitous brick toilet block into a structure the community can take pride in. Architect Anna Paton from Sam Crawford Architects will discuss her Sydenham Green Amenities project and Wicks Parks Amenities proposal in Marrickville, while architect Andrew Short from Welsh + Major Architects will speak about his Cohen Park Multi-purpose Courts and Amenities in Annandale and forthcoming Fenwick Stone Building project in East Balmain. Curated and introduced by local architects Sam Rigoli, Michael Zanardo and Casey Bryant, the Architecture on Show talks are presented by Inner West Council in association with the Australian Institute of Architects.

Jane Austen and the Secret Service This intriguing talk will be presented by Sheryl Craig, an American academic visiting Australia. Her latest book is Jane Austen and the State of the Nation.

NAIDOC Week: The Uluru Statement The Dialogues are a series of meetings of Indigenous Australians, which were held around the country between December 2016 and May 2017. The purpose was to reach broad agreement on whether and, if so, how, to ‘recognise’ Indigenous Australians in the Australian Constitution. Professor Gabrielle Appleby, Associate Professor UNSW, will talk about her experience at the Uluru National Convention.

Comic Con-versation Now in its fifth year, Comic Con-versation celebrates the best of local comic culture with a relaxed Saturday evening of comics, talks and music at Ashfield library. From 5pm meet and mingle our talented with local comic creators in the Artists’ Alley, and purchase their books, comics and art. Listen to live music performed by geek pop singer songwriter, Meri Amber. Explore the library’s graphic novel collections. Want to know what comics to read for you and your children? Come along and talk with our knowledgeable comic enthusiasts. The Storytelling Through Comics panel will discuss how comic creators get their story ideas. The Sydney Comics Guild will present a panel session on freelancing, You Can Die From Exposure.
