MEDIA RELEASE 22 June 2018
An Expression of Interest (EOI) will be advertised this weekend to explore options for the replacement of the eternal flame at the base of the Carillon.
Mayor Graeme Hanger OAM said the current arrangement, a flame fueled by LPG gas, releases soot within the Carillon.
“Over time, the soot corrodes the electronic components that operate the Carillon. The soot also accumulates and discolours the internal brickwork and other porous surfaces,” he said.
“We are keen to explore alternate technologies including lighting, hologram or any other suitable system that will provide for an appropriate commemoration befitting the war memorial”.
At this stage the EOI is only for Council to gain an understanding of the capacity and capability of contractors’ ability to carry out the work.
The company that provides the best offer will be invited to submit a formal quotation, noting that Council is not under any obligation to accept, should it decide not to proceed with the project.
