Red Nose Day celebrates 30 years of saving children’s lives

Maroondah City Council has joined the team behind Red Nose Day to assist SIDS and Kids raise funds to provide support and education services to parents on the prevention of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
Maroondah Mayor, Cr Nora Lamont, said this year’s Red Nose Day (Friday 29 June) is celebrating a significant milestone: its 30-year anniversary of saving the lives of Australian babies and children, with the theme A Little Give, For a Little Life.
“The SIDS and Kids community awareness campaign has been raising funds and assisting parents with the tragic impact of the loss of a child for 30 years now, and is one of the most widely recognised campaigns in Australia,” Cr Lamont said.
“Through millions of dollars raised towards vital research and education programs, there has been a dramatic 85 per cent decrease in the number of sudden unexpected deaths in infancy in Australia – that’s almost 10,000 children’s lives that have been saved.
“Devastatingly, however, every day in Australia nine children under the age of four die suddenly and unexpectedly, with causes including stillbirth, SIDS and fatal sleep accidents.
“The goal is to reduce this number to zero,” Cr Lamont said.
“To support this wonderful cause, Council will have Red Nose Day merchandise for sale at its Braeside offices and at Realm and Croydon Customer Service Centres during the month of June,” she said.
Funds raised through Red Nose Day fundraising activities go to Red Nose’s advocacy and research programs into the causes of all sudden, unexplained and preventable childhood deaths, educating the community on safe sleeping practices, and supporting families who have been devastated by the sudden and unexpected death of a child.
Information on SIDS and Kids is also available for parents throughout the year at Council’s child care centres, preschool and maternal and child health centres.
