Design excellence recognised at the 2018 Boroondara Urban Design Awards

The City of Boroondara announced the winners of the 2018 Boroondara Urban Design Awards on Monday 25 June.
Five winners and two commendations were recognised across four categories.
Councillor Jim Parke, Mayor of Boroondara, acknowledged that all cities change over time. “Council wants to influence this change in a positive way by ensuring new development is creative, attractive and appropriate to the setting,” he said.
“The Urban Design Awards provide an opportunity to celebrate high-quality design which makes a genuine effort to achieve these qualities.”
Councillor Garry Thompson, Chair of Council’s Urban Planning Special Committee, added, “This aligns with a key theme to emerge from extensive community consultations undertaken during the development of the Boroondara Community Plan last year which identified the importance our residents place on local heritage, neighbourhood character and the careful regulation of new development in the municipality.”
Cr Thompson noted there had been an increased number of nominations for this year’s awards. “The City of Boroondara is happy to see a growing interest in the awards from the community, as well as architects and designers.”
“The judging panel was very impressed with the quality of the winners and commendations. They have contributed to raising the benchmark required for design leadership in the municipality.”
The judging panel included urban design experts and Boroondara Councillors. Nominated designs were assessed against a set of criteria that are industry benchmark standards including good fit for context, excellence in design, access, sustainability, and landscaping.
