Cr Michael Macdonald resigns from Maroondah City Council

“It is with regret that I advise the Maroondah community that Wyreena Ward Councillor, Michael Macdonald has resigned from his role as a Councillor of the City of Maroondah, effective 13 July, 2018,” said Mayor of Maroondah, Councillor Nora Lamont.

“Michael was first elected as a Councillor in the Wyreena Ward in October 2008, and at the time was Maroondah’s youngest Councillor. He served a full four year term, during which he was particularly interested in youth affairs and youth welfare,” said Cr Lamont.

“Michael was elected to his second term of office in October 2016, once again as a Councillor of the Wyreena Ward,” said Cr Lamont.

“Over the years, Michael has represented Council on a range of committees and boards, including the Wyreena Community Arts Centre Committee of Management, the Eastern Transport Coalition, the Eastern Metropolitan Region Affordable Housing Alliance, and the Metropolitan Local Governments’ Waste Forum,” said Cr Lamont.

“My fellow Councillors and I thank Michael for his great contribution to Maroondah over the years, and offer he and his wife Laura, and their gorgeous son Darcy, our very best wishes,” said Cr Lamont.

“The process to fill the vacancy in the Wyreena Ward will be managed by the Victorian Electoral Commission via a countback using the votes cast at the October 2016 Maroondah City Council election,” said Cr Lamont.

“It is important that the community be aware that the resignation of a Councillor does not trigger a by-election for the vacant position,” said Cr Lamont.

The Victorian Electoral Commission has been notified of the Extraordinary Vacancy of Maroondah City Council, and the countback is scheduled for 11am Monday 16 July 2018.  See further details on countbacks on the Victorian Electoral Commission website.

Following the formal countback by the Victorian Electoral Commission, the elected candidate will take up the remainder of the Council term through to the next election in October 2020.
