Residents are encouraged to celebrate the tireless work of local volunteers by nominating them in the upcoming Broken Hill Community Volunteer Awards

Nominations are now open for the Awards, which will recognise outstanding volunteers, groups and organisations that give their time to improve Broken Hill and the lives of its residents.

Nominees must be current or recently retired volunteers, or not-for-profit organisations or groups

Awards will be presented at the Celebration of Volunteering, which will be held on Wednesday, 5 September.

Volunteer Working Group Chair, Councillor Marion Browne, said she hoped to see plenty of nominations received this year.

"Volunteers and volunteer groups are so vital to our community, they undertake so much good work that otherwise wouldn't get done," said Cr Browne.

"However our local volunteers are a humble bunch, they don't actively seek accolades for their work, so it's up to members of the community to nominate them and ensure they get the recognition they deserve."

Awards will be presented in the following categories:

Community Cultural Environment Event Health and Social Services Manager / Supervisor Tourism Sporting Youth Emergency Services Peoples Choice

The winner of the prestigious Hall of Fame Nydia Eades Award will also be selected from this group.

Nydia Eades was the city's first female Councillor, and a Queen's Silver Jubilee Medal recipient who worked tirelessly throughout her life for the improvement of women's conditions.

This year will also see the trial of a new award - the People's Choice Award, which will recognise a volunteer who has made a significant difference in someone's life over the past 12 months.

"The other awards can often focus on long-term achievement, so this award provides an opportunity for the community to recognise and encourage someone who has made a big difference just in the last year," said Cr Browne.

Nomination forms can be found online, and hard copies are also available from Council’s Administrative Centre, Broken Hill City Library, or the Visitor Information Centre during business hours.

All nominations are to be received by 5pm (ACST) on July 27.
