Italian-Australian inspired exhibition comes to MAC

Leading Australian sculptor and artist Vince Vozzo opens Testa Dura II at Mildura Arts on Thursday 5 July.

In this exhibition, Sydney-based artist Vince Vozzo explores his Italian-Australian heritage and shows how it has inspired his art practice.

Vince’s father Domenico arrived in Sydney in 1927, but was interned at Hay, NSW, for five years during WWII. He was then sent out to work as a Prisoner of War in different parts of Australia, including Alice Springs, NT, and Butlers Gorge, TAS.

This is a personal history of first generation Italian-Australians during WWI and WWII.

Mildura Rural City Councillor for Arts and Culture Jason Modica said that Vince’s personal history will resonate with so many Italian-Australians living in Mildura. The works on display are influenced by the family stories passed down.

“Vince’s works are carefully crafted in various media which range from Cararra Marble, bronze and papier mâché sculptures through to acrylics on canvas including one painting that’s eight metres wide,” Cr Modica said.

To complement the exhibition, Vince is facilitating a free papier mâché workshop for people aged 16 + on Saturday 7 July at Mildura Station Homestead. Sculptor Vince Vozzo will teach participants how to make their own paper pulp sculpture.
