Council acts to remediate Dendy Street Beach foreshore

Council is working with the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) to remediate a section of grassed foreshore where contaminants were found during site assessments for the Dendy Street Beach Pavilion.

A substance was encountered several metres below the surface during excavation for a Cultural Heritage Management Plan study for the pavilion project in January 2018.

The site was immediately fenced to prevent public access to the area.

Following further testing, the EPA has issued a Clean Up Notice to Council, requiring Council to undertake actions to remediate the site.

Bayside City Council Mayor Laurence Evans said Council was working with the EPA to remediate the site.

“The grassed foreshore area is set back from Dendy Beach, north of the Brighton Life Saving Club,” Cr Evans said.

“Council has engaged specialist environmental consultants to conduct further testing and provide advice on the management of the site.”

“The site is closed off to the public and does not represent a safety hazard.”

“We are working with the EPA and will meet all the actions required under the Clean Up Notice.”

“We will continue to keep the community updated on this issue.”

The Clean Up Notice requires Council to undertake further site assessments to determine what action is required and provide a detailed report to the EPA.
