The City of Albany will celebrate its 20th birthday on July 1 2018, marking two decades since the Town and Shire amalgamated.
Although contentious at the time, the amalgamation has undoubtedly strengthened the Albany community and paved the way for growth and development within the region.
Mayor Dennis Wellington said he was incredibly proud of the City of Albany’s passionate community, staff and Council.
“We have seen some fantastic things happen over the past 20 years,” Mayor Wellington said.
“Since 1998 significant infrastructure including the National Anzac Centre, Albany Entertainment Centre and new sporting grounds and facilities have been constructed, we’ve welcomed large events across the region and, in my opinion, set the bar for regional Local Governments across the State.
“We’ve come a long way since the early days and overcome significant challenges, and we can all be proud of the Albany we call home.”
A number of staff members will also chalk up the milestone, having worked at the City of Albany since the amalgamation, and for the Shire or Town before that.
Chief Executive Officer Andrew Sharpe recognised the commitment of these staff and said their contribution to the organisation was invaluable.
“Twenty staff members have worked for the City for more than 20 years showing an outstanding level of service and pride in our City and we are incredibly thankful for them,” Mr Sharpe said.
“We’re also fortunate to have the City’s inaugural Mayor Alison Goode still on Council and we thank her for her enormous contribution to the City over this time and ongoing support for the community.
“I’d also like to thank all current and past Councillors, staff and volunteers who have contributed so much to our success over the past 20 years.
Mayor Wellington said Council was looking forward to continuing to work with community to provide a bright and prosperous future for Albany.
