Applications for the City of Canterbury Bankstown’s 2018 Community Grants and Events Sponsorship program are now open!

Local community groups and not-for-profit organisations have the opportunity to share in more than half a million dollars in funding this year, to support the delivery of programs and services that benefit the Canterbury-Bankstown community.

Coolaburoo Neighbourhood Centre Manager, Rosanna Umanski, said the funding they received through last year’s program allowed them to kick-start two new initiatives.

"Our Cool ‘kidz’ play and learn at the roo program gives disadvantaged children, aged six to 12 years, the opportunity to participate in fun and exciting activities," Ms Unmanski said.

"We recently took the children, and their parents, tomato and eggplant picking in Windsor and, the following week, we used those ingredients in our very own cooking class! It was so special – the kids, and the parents, have never experienced anything like it before.

"Our Inspiring friendships and staying healthy program is providing residents living in isolation, a year-long program of weekly activities, including restaurant visits, picnic lunches and educational workshops.

"Seeing our participants make life-long friendships is so rewarding. Our activities take place every Tuesday, but they ring each other, and meet up where possible, right through the week."

Mayor, Khal Asfour, said other local community groups should take the chance to follow in Coolaburoo Neighbourhood Centre’s footsteps.

"Another 78 community groups received a share in almost $500,000 last year," Mayor Asfour said.

"The program has helped kick-start hundreds of essential services and programs to residents, over more than 20 years. I’m excited to see what comes out of this year’s program."
