City’s Youth Out Loud returns for tenth anniversary

The City of Swan’s Youth Out Loud public speaking competition is back once again and 2018 marks the popular contest’s tenth year.

The annual youth contest is open for young people who attend school, live, work, or play in the City of Swan.

City of Swan Mayor David Lucas said the City is committed to developing its youth and encouraging their participation in public events.

“Youth Out Loud provides a great opportunity for young people in the City to be a voice for their community,” he said.

“Contestants can speak out about the issues important to them and their surrounding community – including family, friends, neighbours and colleagues.

“The theme for this year’s competition is ‘Home’. We want to hear from contestants about what home means to them and what their hopes may be for their home – whether it’s a physical place, a group of people or a state of mind.

“I encourage all the public speaking enthusiasts out there to register before nominations close on Friday, July 27.”

Contestants can cover topics as far ranging as social media, different worldviews or the environment in their speeches, as long as they are relevant to the theme of the competition.

Whiteman Ward Councillor Adam Kovalevs said a free workshop will be held ahead of the competition to give potential contestants some valuable public speaking tips.

“The workshop will be held on June 29 from 6-8pm at Midland Youth Hub on Padbury Terrace, Midland. I encourage all interested young people to take part.”
