Work scheduled to commence mid July on Guyra main street upgrade

Planning is well underway and preparations in place to commence work on Monday 16 July 2018 (weather permitting) for the $2.7 million Guyra main street upgrade.

The commencement date is later than Council had hoped for due to a delay in finalising the designs with NBN Co, Telstra and Essential Energy, plus the availability of Council water main crews.

The revitalisation of the Guyra main street will include a full reconstruction of the road pavement, relocation of electricity services underground, NBN, water and storm water upgrades, footpath paving and new kerb and gutters. Incorporating feedback from the Guyra community, the design includes two pedestrian crossings with a central refuge which will assist with traffic calming. It also includes street landscaping, bins, seats and new street lights.

Armidale Regional Council Mayor Cr Simon Murray said breaking ground on 16 July in Guyra will be a major milestone for the community.

“The revitalisation of Bradley Street in Guyra has been long overdue and will complement the historic architecture of the street, create unity in the street landscape and provide a safer environment for pedestrians,” said Cr Murray.

“When complete the main street will be a wonderful destination to showcase the town especially when the shop fronts are all painted and the public art developed by the Guyra Central School is in place.”

The project is expected to take approximately six months (weather permitting) and with as little disruption to businesses and the community as practicable.

“Council will actively engage with businesses and the community throughout the project to ensure disruption to the community is kept to a minimum,” said Cr Murray. “Regular communication on the status of the project, potential road closures or major works will be included in the Guyra Gazette and on the Council website. Businesses in the main street will also receive regular updates from the project team.”
