Wollongong City Council has accepted a $39.9 million tender for a 198-metre bridge between Fairwater Drive and Fowlers Road spanning Mullet Creek and the south coast rail line at Dapto.
“This is a momentous occasion for Council,” Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said. “Not only is this one of the biggest contracts Council has awarded, but it will see the completion of the Fowlers Road to Fairwater Drive project. This vital link road will provide flood reliable access to the residents of West Dapto to the Dapto Town Centre, the Princes Highway and the M1 Motorway.”
The tender was awarded to Abergeldie Contractors and includes construction of a 198-metre bridge, upgrades to the intersections at Fairwater Drive and the Princes Highway, deviation of Marshall Street, installation of traffic signals at Fairwater Drive and Daisy Bank Drive, flood channel excavations, service relocation works, shared path, street lighting and landscaping works.
When the road link is complete, Council expects more than 3.3 million motorists will use the road each year. Council has already completed a number of stages on the road link project including earthworks, underground drainage installation, relocation of Sydney Water assets, flood channel bridge construction. Accepting this tender will allow the next phase of work in the project to be completed.
“We expect work on this stage of the project to begin shortly with the works anticipated to be completed in 2020,” Cr Bradbery said. “This stage of the project will require Council to work closely with Sydney Trains to ensure that we have everything in place to construct the bridge over the South Coast rail line.”
Parliamentary Secretary for the Illawarra Gareth Ward welcomed the awarding of the tender for the bridge.
“This is an exciting milestone for the Fowlers Road link, a project which is going to improve commute times, enhance safety and allow for the delivery of more homes in the region,” Mr Ward said.
“The NSW Government is proud to be able to support this vital road infrastructure project through the Illawarra Infrastructure Fund.”
