Wollongong City Council aims to plant about 3,000 trees for National Tree Day on Sunday 29 July 2018.

Council will hold two events this year, with students from six local schools planting trees at their schools and community members invited to help plant trees at three local parks.

Keiran Bartle, Tree Management Officer, said: “Council has been participating in National Tree Day – Australia’s largest tree-planting and nature care event – since its inception in 1996.

“This day is a great opportunity for community members to get involved and do something positive for our community by planting a tree and helping out at one of the parks in the city.

“There’ll be two sites – at Fairy Meadow and Wollongong– where you can come down and get your hands dirty. We will also have students planting trees at six local schools. “We also encourage all residents to invest in trees or shrubs – and you can pick these up through our Greenplan Nursery sales – for their home. Trees provide shade and cool your property as well as provide a haven for local birds.”

National Tree Day started in 1996 and since then more than 3.8 million people have planted 24 million trees and plants. Wollongong City Council plans to spend more than $500,000 this financial year on trees in public parks, reserves and streets under our Urban Greening Strategy and aims to double the tree canopy across the city by 2046.

All community members are invited to join in the planting between 10am and 2pm at two sites on Sunday 29 July:

Greenhouse Park, Wollongong Guest Park, Fairy Meadow
