Cardinia Shire Mayor Cr Collin Ross is encouraging the community to celebrate National Tree Day on Sunday 29 July by nominating a tree of significance to Council’s Significant Tree Register.
“Nominating a tree for the Significant Tree Register is easy to do online, and will help us to better protect our local trees of significance for the benefit of our environment and the enjoyment of our community,” Cr Ross said.
The Significant Tree Register is an opportunity for Council and the community to promote, share and protect trees that are significant and of sufficient value for protection.
A tree can be significant for many reasons including:
its horticultural value being rare or localised being an outstanding example of species its location its age its outstanding size having a curious growth form having aesthetic value its historical value its habitat value Aboriginal significance having social, cultural or spiritual value.Nominated trees will be professionally assessed for their significance and value, and eligible trees will be added to a recommendation list, with the potential to be appropriately protected through the Cardinia Planning Scheme. Trees deemed significant through this process will form the basis of the Cardinia Shire Significant Tree Register.
You can nominate one or several trees for the Significant Tree Register online until Tuesday 18 September 2018 at www.cardinia.vic.gov.au/TreeRegister
You can also get involved in National Tree Day by participating in a local tree planting and nature-care event near you. Search our online events calendar for local events in Cardinia Shire or find or organise other events at www.treeday.planetark.org/involved
