Concept plans designed to turn City Square into a vibrant, people-focused and attractive destination are going out for community feedback from tomorrow (Wednesday, July 4).
The designs aim to transform the space into a colourful, shady, relaxed, fun place to be during the day and a lively, stimulating spot at night.
“Consultations with the community in March this year highlighted what they wanted to see in City Square – trees, plants, alfresco dining, markets, wet weather protection, lighting, CCTV, music, colour, more seating, night time events, a shopping directory and directional signs – and these designs have incorporated all of those ideas,” said Mick Raby, Council’s Director Sustainable Infrastructure.
Created by McGregor Coxall, one of Australia’s leading urban designers, the designs were guided by the need to retain the existing trees, provide public seating, keep the existing shade sails, remove the current pergolas and deliver value for money.
Features include lighting to activate the space, a multi-use, shared kiosk with the potential to be used as a restaurant, bar, DJ booth or popcorn stand, shared outdoor dining areas with umbrella shelters, communal seating, a feature tree with bright foliage, space for markets and other events, digital signage, ground and canopy lighting, a bike hub, diverse street art, a meeting ‘tree’ powered by solar and a flexible car park top level that could be used as a basketball court among other uses.
The $2m project would achieve key objectives of the Coffs Harbour City Centre Masterplan 2031.
