‘Shadowing the Mayor Day’ celebrates cultural diversity
Ballarat (City) 4 Jul 2018

Aboriginal woman Jasmine Graham will share her cultural perspectives with City of Ballarat Mayor Cr Samantha McIntosh today as part of ‘Shadowing the Mayor Day’.

As part of the state-wide NAIDOC Week, Ms Graham will spend the day walking in the shoes of the Mayor - attending meetings with Ballarat community representatives, will meet with Cr Belinda Coates, who is a member of the City of Ballarat’s Koorie Engagement Advisory Committee (KEAG), and will also address the Ordinary Council Meeting at Town Hall tonight.

Ms Graham, a Wirangu, Barngarla, Kokatha woman from the far West Coast of South Australia, will also enable the Mayor to experience a glimpse of the world through the eyes of an Aboriginal woman.

The Aboriginal Education Centre Manager at Federation University was the successful candidate for the opportunity - a new initiative of KEAG.

The City of Ballarat is proud to support NAIDOC Week with a host of activities, including the NAIDOC Week Civic Function and flag raising taking place on Monday 9 July, and the travelling 'Because of Her, We Can!' portrait and story-telling exhibition.

This year’s NAIDOC Week celebrates the theme ‘Because of Her, We Can!’ – highlighting the invaluable contributions Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have made, and continue to make, to our community, our families, our rich history and to our nation.

The City of Ballarat is now working on its third Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) 2018-2020, which outlines the organisation’s innovative and aspirational strategies to further advance reconciliation while empowering Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
