Local chefs to share secrets at Bites

Television celebrity chef, Colin Fassnidge, will be supported by some local culinary experts at this year’s Bankstown Bites Food Festival, on Saturday 28 July.

Bankstown Sports executive chef, Helmut Gundendorfer, will share the knowledge he’s gained over close to 40 years in the food industry, when he takes to the festival’s main kitchen.

"Last year, we had a great time at our burger stand, when we unveiled our Beast Burger, and we thought we may as well take it a step further and go onto the main stage," he said.

"We were lucky with the weather, there were lots of people and everyone seemed very happy and excited. It’s great that the Council organises things like this. It’s great for the community."

Mr Gundendorfer, who’s originally from Austria, will this year prepare a European classic - beef stroganoff with spaetzle and a side of broccolini.

"It is important not to overcook the beef and not to cook the paprika for too long, because that makes it bitter," he said.

"But overall, it’s a simple dish that I think people will enjoy cooking at home."

Mayor Khal Asfour said the cooking demonstrations were always a huge draw card at the annual event.

"With Helmut showing residents and visitors how to cook his delicious dish and My Kitchen Rules star, Colin Fassnidge, also sharing his culinary secrets, there’s a wealth of knowledge to be gained," he said.

"I’m sure there will be lots of incredible dishes being prepared in homes across Canterbury-Bankstown following the event."

Other highlights on the day will include more than 20 food tours and live entertainment, while there will be dozens of stall holders. The festival will run from 10am-4pm in Olympic Parade, Bankstown.
