Today, back in 1971 the Aboriginal flag was first flown. It didn't take long to become one of the most powerful and iconic symbols for reconciliation and hope for many Indigenous people across Australia.
The flag quickly gained popularity after it was flown at the Aboriginal Tent Embassy in Canberra in 1972 representing Indigenous people's fights for land rights and equality. Becoming an official Australian flag under the Keating Government in 1995 the Aboriginal flag flies permanently in Victoria Square.
There's certain protocols around flying flags, one of them particularly important for the Aboriginal flag, is, it should be flown or displayed with the black at the top and the red at the bottom.
This week coming, being NAIDOC week, you'll see the Aboriginal and the Torres Strait Islander flags in many prominent places. We'd love to see where you come across them - upload a photo and the location in the comments below.
