On Wednesday 2nd May, both West Tamar and George Town Councils held Special Council Meetings, regarding the KPMG ‘Tamar Valley Council Feasibility Study’ discussing a possible merger of the George Town and West Tamar Councils.
We can confirm that the West Tamar Council have voted to release the Feasibility Study to the public and were willing to undertake community engagement. However, George Town Council have decided not to proceed with community engagement, effectively ending the investigation into a merger of the two councils.
George Town Council initiated the process 12 months ago when they approached the West Tamar Council about considering a merger. We have worked constructively with George Town over a lengthy period of time, and will continue to work closely with them through resource sharing opportunities into the future.
We appreciate the support provided by the Local Government sector throughout this period and look forward to further enhancing Local Government as an industry in the state of Tasmania.
Mayor Christina Holmdahl would like to thank our ratepayers for their patience throughout the merger process and invites them to take a look at The Tamar Valley Council Feasibility Study which can be downloaded here Tamar Valley Council Feasibility Study - Final Report.pdf (2.83MB)
